Year 2/3 – Strand 3 – Professional Skills for Academics

These sessions will challenge you to extend the skills you have already gained in your academic career to date.  It offers a mix of facilitated workshops and guest speakers to give you a variety of options for developing core professional skills.  This strand aims to provide both an overview of the academic skill set and sessions focused on developing specific skills.

What makes a successful academic?

This session will focus on identifying the wide variety of skills and approaches that enable successful academic colleagues to develop their academic practice and long term career. Speakers will share stories and answer questions.

StrengthsFinder

This session offers participants the opportunity to identify and explore their strengths and areas for development using the Gallup StrengthsFinder assessment tool to access their individual profile.  Understanding of self is an important aspect of effective leadership and is the starting point for the leadership development that you will be able to undertake as part of the broader UAF development programme.

Creative approaches to problem solving

The aim of this session is to explore some approaches to creative thinking and provide you with the opportunity to apply your research knowledge and professional experience to a live issue presented by an external collaborator. This session is designed to challenge thinking and encourage you to try something different.

Working with emotional intelligence

This session aims to enhance participants’ awareness of what truly matters to them and how to utilise this knowledge to create a positive synthesis between their values, behaviours and workplace effectiveness.  Participants will focus on: exploring their personal and professional values; considering how their values can inform their behaviours, decisions and relationships in the workplace and how working with emotional intelligence can lead to enhanced resilience and self-confidence.

Develop and use your network

This session will encourage participants to review their current networks and identify where and how they could grow them to access a broader range of opportunities. Speakers will include highly-networked academics who will share their approaches and the benefits they have generated.

Developing a strategy to achieve your goals – business model you

This session will use the Business Model You tool as a framework to enable participants to plan their goals. This structured approach will help you to explore some of the implications that you need to consider and resources you may need to develop your career over the short, medium and longer term.
